Our ‘perceived’ mandate is contrary and is not something we should measure our actions or therefore be limited by.
On the one hand people think we can stop stuff happening that they don’t like. On the other they think us coming up with ideas and talking to developers is overstepping the mark. Both are wrong.
We do need to be firm and clear in what we do and I think we’re in agreement on that.
Talking to developers is well within what the forum should be about. Being proactive is part of what we should do. Coming up with ideas and exploring opportunities IS within our remit.
If we end up ONLY being reactive then the NDP is just an extension of the council powers and we will have simply added another layer of bureaucracy which was a legitimate concern of some of our detractors pre-referendum.
